In this first episode, Nick introduces the idea behind Ramshackle United – a community podcast born out of a big life decision.
After 20 years in Charlotte, North Carolina, Nick and Zoe had this feeling that it was time for a change. The search led them to Berkley, Michigan, a small city on the Woodward corridor just north of Detroit, where they arrived not knowing anybody.
So they did the most natural thing in the world: they bought microphones and started talking to their neighbors.
Welcome to Ramshackle United!
The word ramshackle means loosely made or held together; rickety; shaky… something flimsy, derelict, dilapidated.
Ramshackle describes our current sense of community after decades of divisive politics. We are barely being held together. We are rickety. We are shaky. We need to stand united for our children, our friends, our families, our neighbors… each other.
We have all lost friends because of politicians and social media influencer divisiveness manipulating us for their own personal gain. They have damaged the fabric that has kept many of us united.
So, here at Ramshackle United, we are taking out the sewing machine to try to fix all the tears in that fabric… stitch by stitch
With each restorative stitch, a red stripe becomes more aligned with a white stripe. A white star brought a little closer to its blue background. Stitch by stitch, we stand more united against those divisive forces that are crippling our communities.
Open conversation about finding commonality in a divisive world will be our needle and thread. Let’s actively avoid politics for a few minutes… let’s just be one human with challenges chatting with another human with challenges of their own.
Let’s take the power away from those who benefit from our division and put it back in the hands of poor, working, and middle class people like you and I.
